2017 Tutor Leadership Retreat

CAPTA, the Capital Area Peer Tutoring Association, is pleased to announce the 2017 Tutor Leadership Retreat!  Taking place on Tuesday-Wednesday, August 15-16 at the Sevenoaks Retreat Center in Madison, central Virginia, this is an opportunity for peer tutors and center directors to collaborate on plans for their upcoming school year.  Time will be allotted for representatives from individual schools to work together, as well as for mixed groups to share successes and troubleshoot obstacles.  We’ll also have unstructured time for socializing and activities like ultimate frisbee, yoga, exploring the river, and a bonfire.  Participants will leave having reconnected with their school teams, made new friends from other CAPTA tutoring centers, and developed an exciting plan for the new school year.

Cost: The cost for overnight participants is $145.  This includes 3 meals, snacks, lodging, activities, and a t-shirt.  A limited number of day-only participants may attend the retreat on August 15 (10 AM – 6:30 PM) at a cost of $85, which includes 2 meals, snacks, some activities, and a t-shirt. Student participants will be able to apply for full and partial scholarships and will be notified of their acceptance prior to the registration deadline. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Directors and students can register for their spots now.

Participants: All retreat participants must belong to CAPTA member schools.  Tutors must be in rising grades 10-12 and have at least one semester of experience working in their school’s center; the retreat is intended for veteran tutors who have a leadership role in their centers. Each school is limited to bringing 7 participants, though additional people may join a waitlist in case extra spots become available.  Tutors may not attend without a director.  Directors — current and potential — may attend without tutors; each school is asked to send at least 2 participants.

Food and lodging: Healthy meals are made in-house, often with ingredients grown on-site in the organic garden.  Dietary restrictions (vegetarian/vegan, dairy/gluten-free etc.) can be accommodated. Dining is buffet service and cafeteria-style seating.  Participants will stay in cabins located on the beautiful, wooded property, which boasts views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and access to the Rapidan River.  Cabins are climate-controlled and have full bathroom/shower facilities.  Sheets and towels are provided.  Directors will stay in the same building with their tutors.

Next steps and timeline:  Pre-registration is now closed.  Schools that pre-register will be granted priority access during official registration.  Pre-registration is non-binding; it is for planning and communication purposes only.
