Volunteer Request

We invite you to volunteer for the 2017 CAPTA secondary school writing center conference, People, Passion, & Purpose. The conference will be on Friday, December 8, 2017 at the George Mason University Arlington campus from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

In years past, the CAPTA conference has been an inspiring and impactful retreat for the 400+ middle and high school tutors, center directors, and school administrators. In order to ensure an organized, safe and energizing experience for everyone, we need some extra helping hands.

There are a variety of ways to help, and many of the needed areas offer the opportunity to watch and engage in the tutors’ presentations. You do not need an understanding of the campus or presentations to volunteer; we will provide maps, context and necessary information beforehand.  If the times you can help vary from the stated timeframe, please let me know and we can make adjustments.

Times Duties # Needed
8:00 – 11:00 Set-Up: Help with registration table, signage, room set-up review, directing students to sessions, etc. 6
10:00 – 12:00 Tutor Presentation Moderator: assist with any technical or presentation needs; introduce presenters and manage time. 15
10:30 – 2:30 Registration Table: Maintain the registration table, provide directions to students, etc. Assist with setting up and taking down lunch. 4
12:30 – 3:30 Tutor Presentation Moderator: assist with any technical or presentation needs; introduce presenters and manage time. Event clean-up if needed. 15
All Day Photographer/Videographers to capture candid moments during Keynote, Tutor Presentations, Director/Administrator Workshop, etc. 2-4


All volunteers will be given FREE registration to the conference to attend the keynote address, workshops, and presentations that are not within the volunteering commitment timeframe (see entire conference schedule here). Volunteers will receive lunch as a thank you for helping us.

There are two ways to sign up to volunteer: 1. Complete this Google Form or 2. email Stephanie Passino at SLpassino@fcps.edu. In late November, you will receive a confirmation email with more specifics regarding the day, parking and lunch. Don’t hesitate to reach out before then to ask any questions!
